Teaching Children How to Use AI Wisely: New AI Literacy Program for Elementary School Students
LY Corporation, SoftBank, and Shizuoka University are jointly developing an educational program called “AI Information Training” to help elementary school students understand how generative AI works, as well as its characteristics and potential risks.
On September 9, 2026, a class using the program was held for 49 fifth-grade students in Tokyo. Students used AI themselves while learning the importance of checking AI-generated information and making their own judgments.
The program introduces three simple questions for children to consider when using AI: Why am I using it? Have I checked it? Am I leaving the decision entirely to AI? The educational materials are scheduled for public release in November 2026.
Comment from GAME-F
AI literacy is not simply about learning how to operate AI.
For today's children, the question will increasingly be not whether they use generative AI, but how they use it.
An essential skill is learning not to accept AI-generated answers automatically, but to check the information, think independently, and ultimately make one's own decisions.
GAME-F believes that rather than simply keeping children away from AI, digital education should help them develop the ability to use AI without outsourcing their thinking to it.
