UNESCO Introduces an AI Competency Framework for Students Beyond Using AI: Understanding, Judging and Creating
On August 8, 2024, UNESCO published its AI Competency Framework for Students, providing an international framework for the knowledge, skills and values students need in the age of artificial intelligence.
The framework defines 12 competencies across four dimensions: a human-centred mindset, ethics of AI, AI techniques and applications, and AI system design. These are organized across three progression levels: Understand, Apply and Create.
The framework goes beyond teaching students how to operate AI tools. It emphasizes critical judgement, safe and ethical use, human agency and the ability to participate creatively in the development of AI.
Comment from GAME-F
AI education can no longer be reduced to the question of whether children should or should not use AI.
Children need the ability to understand AI, critically evaluate its outputs, make their own decisions, and use it safely and ethically.
For AI education from “using AI” to “living wisely with AI.”
